On the occasion
of the "Carré Rive Gauche 2008", the gallery-owner Thierry Mercier - remaining
faithful to his reputation as a "discoverer" - is exhibiting 46 works by
the painter Antoine MARTINEZ (1913-1970). In fact this
is the first time that certain works have been on show, for the artist -
of a solitary temperament - deliberately kept himself apart from the public
eye.
The figures, landscapes and still-lifes - a representative selection of
his expressive painting and his different periods, bear witness to the emotions
of the man and the research of the painter. Antoine Martinez
expressed himself exclusively through his painting. He could spend days
on end thinking about the paintings he was working on, composing colours,
light, contrasts and reliefs in his mind. But once at his easel he was extremely
quick and spontaneous. With skillful brush strokes he captured moments of
life and glimpses of the world.
